Bourbon & Book Club - Chapter 2

We are headed back to the cozy confines of the Horton Hotel for another monthly gathering of the High Country's favorite casual book club. This month, we are pairing our spirits with Ava's Man by Rick Bragg. It’s a masterfully written, heartwarming, and gritty tribute to a legendary Southern family patriarch, making it the perfect backdrop for a night of great conversation and even better company.

To match the rich storytelling, the evening will feature a specially crafted themed cocktail alongside a few unique and interesting pours selected just for our group. You can look forward to a completely relaxed atmosphere where you can actively debate the book, chat about the themes, or simply sit back and enjoy the beautiful space.

As always, reading is completely optional. Whether you finished the entire book, skimmed a single chapter, or just appreciate the vibe of a great hotel bar and a glass of fine bourbon, you absolutely belong here. There is no homework required—just bring your appetite for good drinks and a desire to meet some fantastic new people.

Bourbon & Book Club - Chapter 3

Pour yourself a double and dust off your fedora because the High Country’s favorite book club is taking a turn down a dark, atmospheric alley. This month, we are gathering back at the Horton Hotel to dive into After Pearl by Stephen G. Eoannou. It’s a gritty, fast-paced historical noir set in 1942 that follows a hard-boiled private eye caught in a web of mobsters, mysteries, and wartime secrets. Fun fact: the author actually came up with the idea for this novel while sitting at a bar nursing a glass of bourbon, making it the absolute perfect pairing for our next gathering.

To match the suspense of the 1940s detective vibe, the evening will feature a specially crafted themed cocktail alongside our usual lineup of unique, hand-picked pours. The atmosphere will be entirely relaxed, giving you the perfect space to dissect the clues of the mystery, talk about classic hard-boiled fiction, or just kick back in a comfortable chair and soak in the conversation.

As always, the golden rule of this club remains: reading is completely optional. If you finish the book and want to talk plot twists, great; if you don't even crack the cover, you are still entirely welcome to just show up for the exceptional drinks, the cozy hotel lounge, and the friendly faces. No homework required—just pull up a chair, enjoy the night, and meet some fantastic new people.

Battle of the Bourbons!

September's big event is taking place at the beautiful home of Scott Macintosh. The theme was picked by Craig, it's his birthday on the 25th so Cynthia let him choose! We're trying something new.....

Everyone will bring their (current) favorite bourbon (or rye or whiskey) as well as the name of their favorite charitable organization.

Craig & Cynthia will pour the bottles you bring into unlabeled bottles, and put them out for all the attendees to sample.

In front of each bottle will be a box where you can vote with your wallet for your favorite of the night. The winning bottle will represent the winning charity, and all the voting proceeds will go to that organization. So, make sure to bring some cash!

The one who brought the winning bottle will also get bragging rights and a small prize for being the winner :-)

We will have a signup sheet for members to bring food items to share. Start thinking about your favorite pour and be ready to battle it out with the other members of the group!

October meetup with Weldon Mills Distillery

In October, we will celebrate fall with an afternoon gathering at Billie Rogers' pavilion. Since it's almost Halloween, we'll be leaning into that theme. Stay tuned for details about that.

We will also be welcoming in Weldon Mills Distillery. Mike Cobb will be bringing some of their offerings to share with the group. He'll be able to tell us all about what they are doing and plan to do in the future!

In less than a decade of operation, Weldon Mills Distillery has achieved extraordinary results. Recognized as the #1 small-batch micro-distillery in America, its bourbons have earned Platinum and Gold honors in one of the most competitive spirits categories in the world.
